RALEIGH, N.C. – Jasmine Zavala, an educator, policy analyst, and small business owner, filed to run for Wake County Board of Education-District 1. A first generation college graduate and the daughter of immigrants, Jasmine emphasized the importance of education in her own life in her campaign announcement.
“Education gave me the chance to not only build a better future for myself, but to become an advocate for others. As a classroom teacher, I saw myself in my students and worked tirelessly to help them discover their own potential.” said Zavala, who taught third and fifth grade.
Jasmine also cited recent data showing North Carolina’s education funding ranking 50th in the nation as a motivation for her candidacy.
“Having experienced the day-to-day realities of our public schools, I know our educators, students, and families need our support now more than ever,” continued Zavala. “My focus will be ensuring every child, no matter their background, or where they live in our county, receives the resources and support they need to succeed.”
Jasmine’s campaign has earned early support from local leaders that recognize the need for her experience and leadership in Northeastern Wake County.
“Building a thriving economy and safe community starts with strong public schools. With her background as a teacher, policy analyst, and engaged community member, I know Jasmine will be a great partner to Wake Forest and Northeastern Wake County’s municipalities on the Wake County Board of Education,” said Wake Forest Mayor Ben Clapsaddle.
“I’m proud to support Jasmine and look forward to working with her to ensure our schools are fully funded, our teachers receive the pay they deserve, and every child has access to great opportunities in Wake County,” said Haseeb Fatmi, State Senator for North Carolina’s 18th District.
Zavala, a proud graduate of Wake County Schools, lives in Wake Forest with her husband and high school sweetheart. She holds a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a degree in Business and Economics from Meredith College. She worked as a policy analyst for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission before becoming a classroom teacher. An active member of her community, she founded Latinos of Wake Forest and currently serves as a volunteer immigration specialist while managing her family’s local restaurants.
